The science of superior performance.
Our proprietary ÆON™ Technology is not a coating or finish. It's a way of making laminate more powerful by infusing fine and accurately placed aluminum oxide particles directly into our melamine, providing invisible, permanent, always-there protection.

Frequently asked questions
How is the laminate-making process different with ÆON™ Technology?
For traditional laminate, particles of aluminum oxide – the primary material that determines the wear resistance of laminate – is incorporated in the paper overlay. The deposition of these particles is dictated by the paper making process, before the overlay comes to Wilsonart to be made into laminate. With ÆON™ Technology, aluminum oxide particles are engineered within and throughout the sheet. This is completed in Wilsonart’s manufacturing facility to ensure consistency and quality of placement.
What is aluminum oxide?
Aluminum oxide is a hard, colorless, inorganic mineral that is produced from abundant bauxite ore. Because of its abrasion and scratch resistance to the melamine resin at the top of a decorative surface, aluminum oxide is the backbone of ÆON™ Technology. Fun fact: aluminum oxide is also used to make hip replacements, sandpaper, polishing compounds, certain toothpastes, ceramics, and some filtering and chemical purification materials.
How is ÆON™ Technology tested?
Wilsonart’s Research and Development engineers test scratch and scuff resistance by subjecting laminate samples to 200 passes with a weighted Scotch-Brite® pad. In comparisons, laminates with AEON™ Technology outperform similar competitors by 3X to 5X, depending on finish and pattern.
Wear resistance is measured according to International Organization of Standardization (ISO) standards, noting how many cycles of abrasive sandpaper are needed to wear through the laminate from initial wear to complete penetration of the decorative surface. Wilsonart® Laminates with AEON™ Technology outperform competitive laminates with similar finishes on wear resistance by a factor of up to 3X.
