Glass House: Buildings for Open Living by Nicky Adams

The cover Nicky Adam's Glass House, Published by Vendome Press

“The history of architecture is the history of the struggle for the window.” – Le Corbusier

Glass House: Buildings for Open Living is a survey of some of the most iconic glass houses of the 20th Century as well as an introduction to some stunning contemporary structures. Since its invention in 1905, mass-produced sheets of flat glass have allowed for the design of radically different buildings. Windows were made larger and larger until they became the wall itself. This began a new dialog between the inside and the outside of a building, and between private and public space. These homes consistently feature glass walls and an open plan, or a reduction of interior walls that create large, open, multiuse spaces. Included are some of the most iconic glass houses from around the globe. Structures include Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe’s Farnsworth House in Plano, IL begun in 1946, Phillip Johnson’s Glass House in Canaan, CT from 1949, a Le Corbusier, Eileen Gray and Oscar Niemeyer designed house in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, France, and the iconic John Lautner designed Hollywood Hills house in Los Angeles.

The book is divided into four chapters which include The Innovators, Indoor – Outdoor Living, Breathing New Life, and At Home in the Landscape. Forty projects featured were designed by world class architects. The book is sumptuously illustrated with more than 200 full color images.

Whether you are a practicing architect or interior designer, or just looking to let a little more light into your life, this book may be just what you need.
