New Technology Keeps Children Safe in the Bathroom

11/12/2007

TEMPLE, Texas (June 2007) – Most parents would never guess that the bathroom ranks right behind the kitchen as the most dangerous room in the home for children, posing a risk for burns, frequent contact with bacteria and harsh, poisonous cleaning supplies. Parents planning a home construction or remodeling project can take advantage of new technologies that will make their bathrooms safer and easier to maintain.

Stay Cool
Since children’s skin is more sensitive than adults, water temperature control is important in any child-safe bathroom. Installing a pressure-balanced mixer valve in the shower prevents a surge of hot water when water is used elsewhere. Additionally, a pre-set temperature control prevents increased water temperature if a child accidentally bumps the handle while bathing.

Surface Safety
While granite is a popular countertop material today, it requires a lot of maintenance to keep clean and free of germs and bacteria. In contrast, laminate countertops are easy to clean and don’t require harsh cleansers and sealers. Because it is non-porous, it provides a defense against bacteria, mold and mildew.

Ask for laminate countertops with “clipped corners” and beveled or rounded edges – the look is much richer and the softer edges can be safer around active children. For natural stone appeal, Wilsonart HD™ High Definition™ Laminate offers the look of polished stone by providing a surface with both depth and dimension at a fraction of the cost and care requirements.

Slippery When Wet
Marble, glazed tile, and manufactured wood flooring may look stunning in the bathroom, but these surfaces can become very slippery. Textured floor tile is a better choice, offering grip to bare, wet feet. If you have a smooth floor that won’t be changed, use bath mats with rubberized backing in places likely to get wet.

Water Conservation
Another way to improve bathroom safety, and save water, is to install an electric eye that turns water on when you pass your hands in front of it.  The preset water temperature minimizes scalding and the water automatically shuts off when you remove your hands.
